Dexter’s Jennifer Carpenter: ‘It’s Harder and Harder to Justify’ Deb Not Realizing Her Brother Is a Killer

As Dexter's Debra Morgan, Jennifer Carpenter has a way with foul words and overlooking the obvious: her brother's Dark Passenger. When we left her last week, she had just been promoted to lieutenant over the more seasoned Batista (the squeaky fucker gets the grease), leaving us to consider: Does her ascension to the top mean she's that much closer to finding Dexter out? Or are we just that much closer to our televisions next time we yell, "Ask him why he's always the first person to arrive at a crime scene!" (Please, God, don't let Dexter get caught.) We spoke with the Kentucky-born actress about her character's blind spots, why they drive her crazy, too, and the dirty Debism she's saving for next season.

Previewing 'Dexter' Season 6 With Jennifer Carpenter.

Dexter Morgan has sliced his way into a bloody niche on TV. As it begins its sixth season tonight, Showtime's Dexter can boast both critical acclaim and an audience that's enraptured by the life of Miami's most loved serial killer. Dexter's biggest supporter - and also the largest threat to his lethal secret - is his sister, homicide detective Debra Morgan.

Jennifer Carpenter talks ‘Dexter,’ says sixth season is the best yet

Dexter will be killer this season.

Dexter Morgan is returning to his old murderous ways in the upcoming sixth season, premiering on Sunday, October 2, on Showtime, and Jennifer Carpenter, who plays Deb, says fans won’t be disappointed.

With such guest stars this season as Edward James Olmos, Colin Hanks, and Mos, formerly Mos Def, Carpenter says it is “probably our best season so far.”

Jennifer Carpenter Takes The Stage.

Jennifer Carpenter may have a penchant for taking on bloody roles, as the star of Showtime's Dexter proves as Kayleen in Rajiv Joseph's Gruesome Playground Injuries, now at Second Stage Theater. In the two-character work, in which she co-stars with Pablo Schreiber, Carpenter must portray different ages over the course of 30 years while grappling with a dark, romantic relationship and the way it manifests itself within that time span. TheaterMania recently spoke with Carpenter about the show.

What's Up, Jennifer Carpenter? The Gruesome Playground Injuries Star on Not Having a Backup Plan

It’s been almost nine years since Kentucky-bred, Juilliard-trained Jennifer Carpenter made her Broadway debut in The Crucible alongside Liam Neeson and Laura Linney. She’s been in Hollywood ever since, starring in films like The Exorcism of Emily Rose and Quarantine and creating the role of badass, foul-mouthed cop Debra Morgan in Showtime's Dexter. (Unfortunately, her personal life has had its own drama; she recently filed for divorce from her Dexter co-star and husband of two years, Michael C. Hall.) Right now, Carpenter is back in New York, co-starring with Pablo Schreiber in Rajiv Joseph’s darkly funny two-hander Gruesome Playground Injuries at Second Stage. It's a love story, told in non-linear scenes, of Doug and Kayleen, who always reenter each other's lives when one is injured but can somehow never quite connect. During a break between shows, Carpenter gave Broadway.com the skinny on why Gruesome is just what she needs right now.

Michael C. Hall's marriage is six feet under.

"Having been separated for some time," the Dexter star and wife Jennifer Carpenter are divorcing after less than two years of marriage, according to a joint statement from the actors' reps to EW.com.

Seems like that could make for some uncomfortable moments around the craft services table, considering Carpenter plays Dexter Morgan's unwitting sister, Debra.

'Dexter''s Jennifer Carpenter on Her Favorite Debra Morgan Swears

During the fifth season of Dexter, Detective Debra Morgan has really come into her own. At first it seemed like she was falling into all her old traps: messing up at work, getting down on herself, and falling for the wrong guy. But as we near the end of the season (the penultimate episode airs this Sunday), it’s clear this is the year everybody’s favorite potty mouth grows up. We sat down with actress Jennifer Carpenter, who plays Deb, and asked her the big questions: What’s the deal with Quinn? What would happen if Deb found out the truth about Dexter? And who is really responsible for Deb’s profanity-laden, hilarious one-liners?

Jennifer Carpenter looks to lighter side beyond 'Dexter'

Jennifer Carpenter knows what it's like to be put through the wringer. Her ordeals in the past few years include being possessed by the devil and battling virus-infected zombies. Much of her present schedule involves playing a driven but hypersensitive homicide detective on the hit Showtime drama "Dexter," who has no clue that her beloved half-brother moonlights as a serial killer.

But the actress is hoping for some daylight. Inside Carpenter's gallery of intense, troubled characters is a clown just busting to break loose.
